Henning Larsen Wins Bid To Re-Structure Siemens Munich Headquarters

Siemens has chosen Henning Larsen Architects [5] to give their Munich headquarters a sustainable upgrade. Of the twelve proposals submitted by design houses throughout Europe, the Copenhagen-based firm’s design was selected for its comprehensive approach to sustainable urban development [6]. The upgraded headquarters slated to begin construction in the fall of 2012 will feature a host of Siemens eco-friendly technology, including energy efficient lighting and photovolatic panels [7], and will be smoothly integrated into the city’s historical district.

The flexible, well-lit interior workspace will accommodate up to 1200 employees. Catering to the pedestrian via a network of accessible walkways, the new headquarters consists of a series of interconnected buildings that conceal greenery-filled courtyards [9]. This complex – with its groundfloor bistros, cafes and other offerings – also acts as a bridge between Munich’s cultural and historic district.
Henning Larsen has paid particular attention to ensure that the historic main building on Wittelsbacherplatz, an outstanding example of neo-classical architecture designed by Leo von Klenze in the nineteenth century, will be preserved [10] even as it is connected to this more futuristic design. Employees are expected to occupy the new headquarters by 2016.
