Herman Miller, the company behind the famous Aeron cradle-to-cradle chair, has just won another point for sexy sustainability by offering new takes on eight furniture design classics in eco-friendly fabric. The new Herman Miller Environment collection includes the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair, the Executive chair and the Compact sofa. The selected eco-revamped designs will be stocked exclusively by ABC Home, which chose the range for its ability to integrate today’s sustainability agenda into designs with timeless beauty.

A Greenguard-certified range of eco-friendly fabrics is used to cover the pieces, from ‘Massive Paisley’ on the Executive Chair to ‘Intricate’ on the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair. Produced by ISO14001-certified manufacturer Maharam, the fabrics were chosen for their ability to suit any setting from the coziest home to the flashiest office. Greenguard certification identifies products with low levels of formaldehyde, VOCs, respirable particles, ozone and other pollutants.

Other models in the Environment range include the Aeron, Mirra, and Cella chairs, which all meet cradle to cradle certification criteria. Cradle to cradle thinking is the brainchild of eco gurus William McDonough and Michael Braungart, who believe that products should not simply aim to be ‘less bad’ but should form part of an infinitely sustainable system. They believe that products should be designed so materials fall into one of two loops at the end of their useful lives: either breaking down to nourish the soil or being eternally used and recycled.
