Today the Hertz Corporation announced that they’ll be the first car rental company in the United States to offer electric vehicles (EVs) as part of their rental program. The EVs will be deployed through the company’s Connect by Hertz program in New York City, followed by Washington DC and San Francisco. Beginning in 2011 they’ll be adding EVs to their rental locations worldwide. If you’ve got a trip coming up — or just need a ride for an hour or two — you can reserve an EV on their website right now. Green transportation for everybody!
“Hertz is the first to provide consumers with electric vehicle access on a global scale,” noted Mark P. Frissora, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hertz, “we’re the first to make tomorrow’s driving experience available to consumers today.” With sales of EVs — like the Chevy Volt and the European Car of the Year, the Nissan Leaf — off and running, Hertz is sure to hit it big with their EV rental and car share programs.
New York City officials are excited that the city is the first stop on the Hertz electric road — the Director of the Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability for New York City, David Bragdon noted, “Electric vehicles and car sharing help meet two fundamental PlaNYC goals, making New York a cleaner and less congested city,” PlaNYC is a city-wide program that aims to reduce emissions and increase quality of life and green spaces. Hertz plans to leverage a fleet of electric vehicles as incentive for transportation hubs to stock up on EV charging stations and help form an EV grid. As an incentive to try out their new EVs, Hertz is offering a free one-year Connect by Hertz membership when you book an EV before December 25th!
