They've also had electric trains that can theoretically operate at 140mph (and have hit speeds in the 160's - although they also tend to max out at 125mph in service) since 1990. The 140mph trains may be new on certain routes, but they aren't the first high speed trains in the UK. Britain has had high speed diesel trains running at 125mph (and capable of setting records in the 140′s) since the 1970′s.
