A children’s book illustrator from British Columbia [1] wanted to build a studihinto cabin on an existing 200-square foot lot in under a month with a modest budget, so she contacted Riley McFerrin of Hinterland Design [2] who took up the challenge. The result is a stunning modern workspace that is filled with natural light.

McFerrin, a local designer, artist and builder, worked with the owner to come up with a design that took advantage of the gorgeous view, which overlooks the owner’s property and out into the Straight of Georgia. According to Hinterland, “the homeowner wanted the studio [3] to be small but airy, bright but cozy, inspirational yet modest.”

In one-month, the original structure was completely demolished and the cabin was built from the ground up on the same footprint, including a new foundation, frame, utilities and custom-built finishes. Salvaged [4] windows, siding and doors were used to complete the space and repurposed timber was used to create interior shelving and storage. The building suits the rustic charm of the surrounding environment while providing a modern, cozy place for the owner’s creativity to flourish.
