Historic Horse Stables Converted into a Contemporary Home in the UK

The Manor Horse Stables were once home to Lovely Cottage, the horse that won the 1946 Grand National horse race near Liverpool. However over the years the stables were no longer needed and fell into disrepair. AR Design Studio was working on a refurbishment of the main Manor House when they found the stables and saw a vision for a contemporary home. Using the stables' original bones, stalls and even many of the fixtures, the Winchester-based firm converted the stables into a bright, naturally lit, 3 bedroom home.
After winning the 1946 Grand National , Lovely Cottage came home to enjoy a well-deserved rest in his stables on the outskirts of Winchester. Despite the dilapidation, the long, one-story block building was listed as a Grade 2 historic structure. The history and the character were the driving force behind the adaptive reuse and conversion of the structure into a family home. Original fixtures, features and materials were reused while remaining true to the original structure as well as keeping things simple.
The long building is arranged in a linear fashion with the living room on the far end. Next to that is a bathroom, then the dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms and finally the master bedroom at the opposite end. The old stall partitions were refinished and used as walls. In the bathrooms, original horse troughs were refurbished into sinks and lead hooks become towel racks. New efficient windows bring in lots of natural light along with additional skylights. The bright white walls bounce light further around the interior. Finally radiant heating and concrete floors provide efficient climate control of the contemporary home.
