Houston to Get First Privately-Funded EV Charging Network in US

Chalk this up to things we never thought we’d see: Houston, that bastion of the oil industry, is getting the first privately-funded electric vehicle charging network in the U.S. The $10 million network, which is being developed by NRG Energy, will offer both public charging stations and home charge spots to residents of Harris County, Texas.
By the end of 2011, NRG expects to have between 50 and 150 public charging stations in the Houston area. The stations will be in all the obvious places–apartment complexes, condo communities, supermarkets parking lots, shopping centers, and business districts all along the freeways. NRG will install both Level 2 and Level 3 fast chargers, which means residents can juice up their vehicles in under half an hour.
Live in Harris County and want to get in on the action? The so-called evGo network will offer a variety of charging plans for subscribers. For example, customers can pay $89 per month for a three-year service agreement, installation of a home charging station and dock, unlimited charging at evGo network stations , and unlimited home charging with no additional electricity cost.
If you live elsewhere in Texas, stay tuned–NRG is already in talks with utilities in both San Antonio and Austin.
