This weekend, the sixth installment of the ever-popular Fast and Furious franchise [1] roared into US cinemas with its box office-winning combination of fast cars, big biceps and simmering homo-eroticism. However despite being a film based around gas-guzzling cars, large explosions and globe-trotting antics, the production actually tried to reduce their footprint (despite trashing over 300 cars! [2]) where they could as part of Universal Studios’ ‘Green Is Universal’ [3] policy.

The film, which was filmed partly in the UK [2] and the Canary Islands, implemented widespread recycling and composting in order to reduce waste where they could. Crew (and I’m assuming cast) meal packaging was recycled, and used cooking oil was refined as fuel for the 4×4 pick-up trucks that carried equipment on set. According to Universal Studios [3], this was all part of “‘closing the loop’ where one not only recycles, but also uses the recycled product.”

All of these practices were implemented by the production’s designated Environmental Manager, who also made sure that a large amount of set dressing such as fruit and vegetables, clothing, shoes and luggage were donated to a London group that distributes items to various local charities [4].

Throughout the entire production, the Fast & Furious 6 cast and crew were also kept informed by “Green Facts” on their daily schedules and sign postings stating their environmental progress.  One can only imagine they all found that rather ironic as they climbed into their Dodge Chargers, revved the engines and drove away from a massive explosion.

Time will tell if Fast and Furious 7 will see Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and co-racing around in hybrid vehicles [5]. Or on bicycles.
