Gallery: Ilan Dei Studio Opens a Shipp...

Designer and fabricator Ilan Dei's new store is part art gallery, pop up shop and community living room. Built out of three 20-foot shipping containers, the indoor/outdoor space is an expression of California itself and also a hip shop to show off Ilan Dei's wares. Located on Abbott Kinney Boulevard in Venice, CA, the shop is bright and open and centered around an outdoor deck. The shop is only set to be open until the end of September, so be sure to hit it up before it's gone.

Ilan Dei Studio opened its new pop-up shop on July 28th in Venice, CA to sell the studio’s designs as well as act as a community living room for the area. Built from three recycled shipping containers, the shop takes over a vacant spot at 1650 Abbott Kinney Boulevard. One container, with its metal side replaced with glass facade, serves as the storefront to entice people in. A fabricated, perforated aluminum gate completes the street front and serves as the entrance to the community living room. In the back is an open deck surrounded by two more shipping containers, one of which serves as an art gallery currently curated by Wilshire Boulevard-based Edward Cella Art & Architecture Gallery.

The pop-up shop is open through September and will show off Dei’s Cord Collection of outdoor furniture, his Namibia collection, and a selection of home accessories. The deck can serve as outdoor event space, ping pong arena, and even a place for yoga classes or other workshops. Dei’s design for the store sought to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor space and he told the LA Times that the shop was “a true testing lab for California outdoor living.” After the store closes in September, the containers will be permanently reused in one of Dei’s new projects – an off-grid eco-hotel near Lake Isabella in the Sierras.
