Earlier this year, Inhabitat was excited to introduce you to Oru, the Origami Kayak [2]. The 12-foot-long, 25-inch-wide elegant, one-man kayak folds into its own compact carrying case, making it easy to throw on the back of a car or carry with you on a trek. As of today, the Oru is available for order on Kickstarter [3] with 50 priced at the early-bird special of $750. Soon, you could take the lightweight, corrugated plastic kayak out onto the open water and give the sea otters something to envy.

For kayak enthusiasts, the Oru [5] is a big deal in a small package. Inspired by compact urban living, designer Anton Willis created the kayak to be able to be taken with intrepid nature-lovers off of the beaten path. “When I moved into a small apartment in San Francisco, I had to put my kayak into storage. Reading an article on recent advances in origami got me thinking…What if you could make a real boat out of origami? What if you could take a boat with you everywhere you wanted to go?” he asked.

Four years and many prototypes later, the Origami Kayak was born. Able to shrink down into a 25lb case measuring only 33” x 29” x 9”, the boat made from a single sheet of plastic is able to fit in just about any car or city apartment. Guaranteed for 20,000 folds over its lifetime, the Oru uses 70% less petroleum than its rotomolded relatives and is fully recyclable. As strong as it is ingenious, the boat can hold up to 250 lbs and can be fully assembled in five minutes.

Beginning this week, the Oru is available for order through Kickstarter at $800 with the first 50 priced at $750. Those who order now will have their kayaks shipped in spring of 2013, just in time to to take advantage of good weather and work off the holiday weight.
