Researchers at the University of Nottingham have made an astonishing discovery that a 10th century Anglo-Saxon potion for curing styes can also cure the brutal hospital superbug MRSA. While the ingredient list reads like a witch’s brew—cropleek, garlic, wine and oxgall—the resulting self-sterilizing concoction has performed surprisingly well in tests to treat MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria that is the scourge of hospitals.

Israel installs the largest solar field of any parliament in the world

Knesset, Israel, solar, solar field

The geographically small Israel is making a big statement about the importance of solar energy in the sun-blessed Middle Eastern nation. On Sunday, legislators and environmentalists gathered at the Knesset, Israel’s national assembly in Jerusalem, to inaugurate the largest solar field of any parliament in the world (Germany’s Bundestag parliament building comes in second followed by Austria’s parliament). Nearly 1,500 solar panels placed on the Knesset roof and surrounding buildings will provide 10 percent of the assembly’s electricity with an installed capacity of 450 kw.

Solar Impulse lands in China to share messages about clean energy

solar impulse lands in china

Solar Impulse 2 landed in China on Tuesday, bringing a strong message about the importance of clean energy and sustainability to a country with major environmental issues. As we follow the epic round-the-globe journey of the solar-powered one-man aircraft, it becomes clear that this is not just about the feat of getting a solar-powered craft around the world, but it’s also about spreading awareness about the amazing power of clean energy sources. Landing in China completes the fifth leg of the Solar Impulse’s adventure and nabs yet another world record for the team. Arguably, this leg of the journey was the most difficult to date, as it involved navigating the sun-powered plane at high altitude over the mountainous regions of Yunnan and Sichuan and required pilot Bertrand Piccard to wear an oxygen mask, since the cabin is not pressurized like that of a commercial airplane. Solar Impulse first launched from Abu Dhabi on March 9, and the craft will make one more stop in China before heading across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii.

In an attempt to ease the burden, and perhaps expand their market share, Tesla unveiled plans for their next ground-breaking innovation: a plug-in hybrid mobile home.

After several months of highly publicized apartment hunting in New York City, Kim Kardashian and hubby Kanye West have closed on a new pad – but the tone-deaf purchase has many New Yorkers saying, “Oh, Yeez”. The celebrity couple considered several other posh addresses, including a penthouse in same building as Leonardo DiCaprio’s Greenwich Village eco-friendly digs, before deciding to buy out an entire micro-apartment building being constructed under the adAPT NYC plan to create smaller, more affordable housing options for New Yorkers. According to reports, the Kardashian-Wests paid three times the amount it cost the developers of MicroCube NY to erect the 7-story Soho tower, and have already begun consulting with their personal architecture team about how to gut the project and turn it into a “massive, urban mega-mansion.”

While the northeastern U.S. was deluged with snow over the past few months, much of the world was experiencing some remarkably balmy temperatures. Now, the coldest place on Earth—Antarctica—has registered what might just be the highest temperatures ever for the continent. On March 24, daytime temperatures at Antarctica’s Esperanza research station soared to 63.5°F (17.5°C), and if this temperature is confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization, it may set an alarming new record.
