KAYIWA DINO is a 3D-printed, modular clothes rack that reinvents storage

Kayiwa, Kayiwa coat rack, 3d printing, 3d printed coat rack, modern coat rack, modular coat rack, modular design, 3d printed modular design, reader submission, green design

Just when you thought that clothing racks are to remain forever mundane, KAYIWA excavates the DINO. During the last decade, 3D printing technology advanced considerably, which allowed the DINO concept to be properly realized. Like all KAYIWA products, this clothes rack blurs the line between design and art. Suspended along an electro-polished stainless steel bar between spacers, hangers stay neat and organized to smoothly swing forward and back and/or move side-to-side for efficient hanging or removal of clothing. Hangers can be made in varying heights, to leave hanging space for long coats or to make them easy to reach for children or wheelchair users. Moreover, hangers can be loaded onto the bar in any order, according to the customer’s preference, to optimize the way they will be used.

How one app fed almost 600,000 homeless people

YouTube Preview Image

A simple lunch with a homeless vet forever changed the life of Komal Ahmad, who was then a student at University of California, Berkeley and is now a CEO. Ahmad was walking near campus a few years ago when a homeless man asked her for money. She bought him lunch instead. The meeting left a deep impact, so she soon devised, along with classmate Chloe Tsang, a way to get campus food waste onto the plates of local people who were going hungry. Her initiative sparked food waste “forwarding” programs on other campuses and inspired an app that has fed almost 600,000 people in the San Francisco Bay area alone.

Tesla’s newest Superchargers are lighter, faster, and cooled by liquid

YouTube Preview Image

In the never-ending quest for technological advancement, Tesla has started rolling out the newest version of its Supercharger stations, which have a handful of obvious differences from the previous models. By far, the “coolest” new feature is the liquid-based cooling system, which keeps the Supercharger’s temperature close to ambient, up to and including the charging cable itself. The previous versions were air-cooled, but the chillier liquid model allows the Supercharger to be smaller, lighter, and possibly produce a faster charge.

Dutch city to hand out free basic income in new social experiment

Utrecht, The Netherlands, Dutch, University College Utrecht, Free Money, Basic Income, urban experiment, social experiment, Dutch City Basic Income, Dutch City free money

If your government gave you enough money every month to cover your bills, would you stay home and watch Orange is the New Black all day, or go out into the world and do meaningful things? This is the question behind a new social experiment in The Netherlands. Utrecht authorities are teaming up with the University College Utrecht to give people living on welfare a basic income. For nothing. Free money, no questions asked. They will then track recipients to determine whether a welfare system with no rules results in a happier, more productive society.

As a whole, the European Union has some of the boldest renewable energy goals out there; their current commitment is to source at least 27 percent of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030. But a new report from the EU commission, which has been leaked to The Guardian, shows that this goal is set to be far exceeded, with EU nations getting a full 50 percent of their energy from renewable sources by the end of the next decade.

Environmentalists outraged as protected Florida mangroves razed for boat show

international boat show, wetlands destruction, protected mangroves, miami marine stadium, hurricane season, envrionmental destruction, wetlands loss, wetlands ecosystem, bay biscayne, florida keys, sea level rise

Wetlands and mangroves along much of the Gulf Coast are vital coastal ecosystems that also defend against sea level rise and storm surges. For decades these wetlands have been under attack from coastal development and the oil and gas industry, which is why large swathes are now protected. All of this makes it all the more baffling that a private contractor has destroyed a 300-foot stretch of mangrove trees near Miami as part of preparations for the 2016 Miami International Boat Show, yet Mayor Tomas Regalado appears largely unconcerned.
