Designer Jack Albert Trew’s Spokefuge harnesses the power of the pedal to help doctors in remote areas test blood without electric medical equipment. Trew’s simple design uses a bike wheel to power a centrifuge, which enables medical professionals to test for issues like anemia, bone marrow failure and leukemia. The low-tech device was developed to help people living in rural regions across Africa.

Would you be tempted to buy a T-shirt from a flashy-looking urban vending machine for less than $3? Berliners recently had the opportunity and many pounced, unaware that their attempted purchase was part of an awareness-raising campaign related to Fashion Revolution Day. The aqua-and-black painted machine offered T-shirts for just €2 or roughly $2.25 USD, but instead, would-be T-shirt buyers received a surprise: images of sweatshop labor with statistics on the abysmally low wages textile workers earn by making cheap T-shirts and such. Tesla’s long awaited home battery is now on the market. Late in the evening on April 30, Tesla CEO Elon Musk kept his promise for his hotly anticipated announcement about the company’s next product line. Musk admitted the week prior that the announcement would indeed be about the home battery he promised earlier in the year, the details of which have been quite secretive until, well, the announcement. Musk took the stage at 8pm PST on a Thursday evening to make the announcement, in which he wowed the crowd by directing people to the Tesla website, where the stationary battery is already available for pre-order and scheduled to ship within a few months.
