In a bold and historic move, India has become the first South Asian nation to ban all animal testing for cosmetics. On Friday the Drug Controller General announced the ban, adding that the use of modern, non-animal tests for cosmetics and their ingredients will now be mandatory. Similar laws are already in place in the European Union and Israel, and the much needed change in India’s law comes after extensive campaigning by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Humane Society International, and multinational retailers such as LUSH and The Body Shop.
