Warehouse Renovation Showcases Sustainable Materials

When Atlanta based ad agency The Jones Group decided it was time to revamp their image and headquarters, they turned to designer Caryn Grossman of CG Creative Interiors to complete the task. With two early 1900’s warehouses now in her hands and limitless possibilities, the crafty designer decided it was best not to skimp on the green. Her carefully drafted program called for the application of only sustainable materials and low-impact fabrication and construction, and what resulted was a striking environment ready to stir creativity within the new office.
A firm believer in the benefits of collaboration, Grossman worked closely with People of Resource another Atlanta firm also focused on using local and sustainable materials. Together they created furnishings and finishings made from Kirei Board , a reclaimed waste product of the sorghum industry, and Chroma , a renewable material from 3-form , which gave a colorful kick to the custom desks, conference tables, and brainstorming areas.
To offer a more organic feel to the interior, focal walls were also trimmed with Kirei Board, and paintings by local artists were done on panels of compressed wheat straw . As old industrial constructions go, the warehouses were already laden with a wealth of raw textures and surfaces, such as exposed brick walls, timber beams and columns, hardwood and concrete floors, and the design team made their best effort to maintain the integrity of the existing elements.
Finally, to minimize energy consumption and maximize natural light on the lower level, a translucent Pep floor was installed, and each individual light fixture within the building is custom dimmable and made from recyclable steel. As far as we can see, the final product is a great example of how inventive designers can always find a way to maximize the utility and beauty of sustainable materials in any application.
