The XXII Winter Olympics are upon us, and over 6,000 athletes are competing from 85 countries in front of thousands of spectators – but the story behind the scenes is every bit as interesting as the athletic prowess on display. At a cost of $51 billion, the Sochi Games are the most expensive Olympics to date, and they took an immense amount of engineering to put on – from transportation systems and housing for athletes and coaches to state of the art venues fit for the highest level of competition.
