We received a toon of incredible entries that paired creative concepts with excellent use of recycled, reclaimed, and found materials, proving that green costumes are the most original, inventive, and funniest way to do Halloween. Read on for our costume contest winners…

Grand Prize: PLASTIC POISONED MERMAID

This incredible pollution-poisoned mermaid costume was crafted from discarded plastic bags, items found around the house, and waste materials recovered by cleaning up the beach. Well done!

Second Place: TREE AND LUMBERJACK

We love how this creative costume recounted the unfortunate saga of the tree sitters preserving UC Berkeley’s Redwoods.

Third Place: CARDBOARD ROBOT

The excellent use of recycled cardboard boxes, low-VOC paints and eco-friendly adhesives cemented this great grey robot’s place in our hearts.

Runner Up: PROTESTING POLAR BEAR

Polar bears deserve a say in their environment too!

Runner Up: FOREST NYMPH

Our tremendous thanks go out to everyone who participated in this year’s competition – we applaud your DIY ingenuity, skill, and creativity! Here’s a few more of our favorite entries:

The cloth-diapered crazy astronaut Lisa Nowak
