Graco is recalling 2 million strollers from its popular MetroLite and Quattro Tour lines after the models were linked to the strangulation deaths of four infants. While stroller deaths are rare and the deaths associated with this Graco stroller recall occured between 2003 and 2005, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is in the process of reviewing old stroller incidents and taking a hard look at stroller safety. Babies can get trapped between the stroller tray and seat bottom because while their bodies can pass through the opening, their heads often cannot. What You Should Do:
If you have a Graco MetroLite or Quattro Tour stroller, check the list of model numbers on the next page to see if yours has been recalled. If so, stop using it immediately, and visit Graco’s website or call Graco at 877-828-4046 for a free repair kit. However, it is safe to continue using it as a travel system because the space gap isn’t present when the infant car seat is in place.
You should also follow the CPSC’s new stroller safety alert guidelines. Be sure to secure your infant in the stroller properly at all times. The CPSC warns that “serious injury or death can occur in strollers if children are not properly restrained.”
As with the Graco recall, if not secured, babies can slip down between the stroller tray and seat bottom getting their head and neck entrapped, posing a strangulation risk. This risk is especially high for children under 12 months old. Even babies only a few weeks old can become trapped and strangle in a stroller according to the CPSC.
Also, never leave your child unattended in a stroller, especially if the backrest is reclined or in the flat position.
The Graco MetroLite strollers and Graco Quattro Tour strollers involved in this recall were sold at Walmart, Babies R Us, Kmart, Target, Sears, Meijers, Fred Meyer, Burlington Coat Factory, AAFES, and Navy Exchange between November 2000 and December 2007.
