Fans of the groundbreaking¬†Spiritual¬†Midwifery¬†and other¬†Ina May Gaskin books such as Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth, will be delighted to know that the magic of Ina May is coming to the big screen in the new feature-length documentary Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin & The Farm Midwives. Birth Story tells the tale of a group of women (the now legendary¬†Farm Midwives)¬†who came to a rural area of Tennessee in the 70s, where they not only set up a self-sufficient communal¬†society, but also learned how to¬†deliver¬†babies¬†compassionately¬†and personally.

The fabulous Spiritual Midwifery book was one of the results of this social experiment, and as more women read the book and shared the book with their friends, a generation begin to think differently about pregnancy and childbirth — stepping away from overly medical births and toward a more personal and¬†fulfilling¬†birth journey. Today, the United States has backslid into medical birth experiences again. C-section rates are up, as are other birth interventions, so this movie is perhaps one way to bring natural birth back into style, or at least get people¬†thinking¬†about their birth options. Sadly,¬†upcoming screenings¬†of Birth Story¬†are in limited release and skipping over many major metropolitan areas, but you may also email¬†info@birthstorymovie.com¬†to request information about hosting a screening in your town.
