  • Many BWC cosmetics are gluten-free.

Cons:

Maia’s Mineral Galaxy

Maia’s Mineral Galaxy’s makeup line is natural mineral-based and made with non-nano particles. All their mineral cosmetics are produced from loose powders that have no fillers added and their range is large and mostly affordable.

  • Large range of cosmetics.
  • Excellent Skin Deep score.
  • Cosmetic products are non-synthetic, non-fragrant, non-toxic, and chemical and artificial color free.
  • Offers tiny samples so you can try before you buy.
  • Mostly affordable – even for teens.

Cons:

  • Website could be easier to manage.

Costs – Mostly Affordable

  • Fair prices on most products such as eye shadow for $14, $11 for concealer sticks and $10 for lip gloss. They also have a few higher prices though such as $18+ for blush and $34 for finishing powder.

Afterglow Cosmetics

Afterglow Cosmetics offer natural color cosmetics, free of many of the synthetic preservatives, bismuth oxychloride, petro-chemicals, synthetic dyes and fillers found in traditional cosmetics. They have an outstandingly large range of cosmetics too.

Pros:

  • Cruelty-free company.
  • Partner of The Conservation Fund and its Go Zero program.
  • The main materials used in their packaging are recyclable plastics and aluminum and all products are shipped with minimal packaging. They also internally repurpose or recycle all incoming packing material and paper.
  • Mostly paperless company. When they do print they use FSC printing standards and soy inks when possible.
  • Affordable starter kits available if you’re new to minerals.
  • Organic Exclusives Program in place so you receive points good for new makeup with each Afterglow purchase.
  • Useful, easy to manage website in place.

Cons:

  • Decent rating at Skin Deep, though about half their products score a 3, which isn’t that bad, but not as good as a 1 or 2.
  • Expensive for the average teen.

Costs – Expensive

  • Typical costs include $26 for blush, $24 for lipstick, $18 for eye shadow.

Physicians Formula

Physicians Formula was originally created to be fragrance-free, PABA-free, and free from “132 known skin irritants” though the company doesn’t offer much info on those 132 irritants. Many of their products are safer than average though.

Pros:

  • Cruelty-free company.
  • Easy to find at the drugstore, on Amazon and most general grocers who carry cosmetics.
  • Excellent large range of cosmetics including some sub-category lines, such as Organic Wear shown in the next slide.

Cons:

  • You have to really be careful when choosing products. Some score a 1 or 2 on Skin Deep (very safe) while other products, like their bronzer and some eye shadows are less safe with scores of 7 (a high hazard according to Skin Deep). Overall, they have plenty of safer products to choose from, but be sure to check out which ones are best before buying.

Costs – Very Affordable

  • Many of their products can be found on sale for under $15, and usually under $10.

Organic Wear

Organic Wear is a sub-category line of Physicians Formula, which not everyone knows, so I thought it would be good to include them in their own section, especially since this line is unique.

Pros:

  • Cruelty-free company.
  • Easy to find at the drugstore.
  • 100% free of harsh chemicals, synthetic preservatives, parabens, fake fragrances and colors and GMO’s.
  • Colors are light and perfect for young girls.
  • Most of their products score safe at Skin Deep.
  • Recycled packaging.

Cons:

  • Decent range, but not all that extensive. Basically not tons of choices when it comes to colored cosmetics.
  • They’re greenwashing to a point, in my opinion, by using the term “organic” on non-certified cosmetics. Their products contain organic ingredients, but they’re not 100% organic.
  • Double check products on Skin Deep – most Organic Wear products are safer than average cosmetics, but not all.
  • No dedicated website.

Costs – Very Affordable

  • This is one of the better, extremely easy to find, very affordable cosmetic lines out there. Even teens can afford this makeup.

Honeybee Gardens

Since 1995, Honeybee Gardens, Inc. has operated under one simple concept, “Create pure, all-natural bath and body care products made from only the finest organic ingredients, offer them at a reasonable price, and treat every customer like a friend.” This concept is working out well for them too!

  • Cruelty-free.
  • Makeup is free of parabens, FD&C colors and petrochemicals.
  • Excellent inexpensive sample program.
  • Wide range of color choices available.
  • Helpful, informative, easy to manage website.
  • Ingredient disclosure and explanations of products in place, including recommendations for skin patch testing.

Cons:

  • Decent score on Skin Deep – extra notable is their very safe nail polish, but a few of their items got scores of 4 (not as safe).

Costs – Very Affordable

  • Honeybee offers some really good prices and excellent sales to boot. From their $30 four color eye shadow pallets to their $8 single shadows and blush to $12 lip gloss and $13 nail polish, this is safer makeup even teens can afford.

e.l.f.

e.l.f.

You might be surprised about this drugstore makeup find because not only is it super inexpensive but this line is cruelty-free with zero animal testing and they’ve got a fair handful of safer cosmetics as well.

Pros:

  • Cruelty-free line.
  • All e.l.f. products are hyopallergenic and non-comodogenic.
  • Full disclosure of all ingredients are listed on product packaging.
  • So cheap it’s almost unbelievable that they have some safer products!

Cons:

  • When I say e.l.f. has a fair handful of safer cosmetics, I do mean just a handful. The reason they made this list is because if you’re careful, and help your tween or teen check out e.l.f. on Skin Deep you will find some surprisingly safe EXTREMELY affordable products, which is why they’re worth a mention.

Costs – Extremely Affordable

  • e.l.f. is so affordable you might think every one of their products is packed with chemicals, but some of their products such as lip gloss, shimmering eye palettes and eye liners are not only very safe by Skin Deep standards, but seriously under $3-$5 a pop; and I’ve seen e.l.f. on sale for $1. That’s an amazing deal for safe, cruelty-free makeup.

  • The whole line of makeup is natural and hand-mixed.
  • Large range of products, including mineral foundation, blush, mineral concealers, finishing powders, shimmer, satin, and matte eye shadows, as well as mascara and lip products.

  • Signer of The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
  • Voluntarily following the Natural Ingredient Resource Center criteria for labeling natural ingredients and products.
  • Cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny Certified.
  • Some products contain certified organic ingredients.

Cons:

  • A fair range of shade when it comes to color makeup, though not the largest I’ve seen.
  • Some higher priced items.
  • A few products score very poorly on Skin Deep, but overall this is a pretty darn safe line. Just check Skin Deep before buying.

Costs – Fairly Affordable

  • Some EcoGlo products are very affordable such as their $14 blush and $9 eye shadow. Other products cost a little more, like $15 lip gloss, but overall EcoGlo is an affordable brand.

Urban Decay

Urban Decay carries some very unsafe products, but overall they also have an outstanding amount of very safe products (check ratings at Skin Deep before buying) plus this brand appeals to teens and is fairly affordable with a wide color range.

Pros:

  • Cruelty-free company plus they offer many vegan products and are adding more non animal-derived ingredient products all the time.
  • Urban Decay celebrates women via The Global Women’s Rights Awards; awards given annually to individuals who have contributed significantly – often against great odds and at great personal risk – to advance the rights of women and girls.
  • Excellent easy-to-use website with vegan products clearly marked.
  • HUGE amount of products in a rainbow of colors.
  • Affordable palettes of makeup available – great starter sets.

Cons:

  • Some poorly rated products via Skin Deep.
  • Some higher cost items.

Costs – Mostly Affordable

  • Urban Decay has vegan eye liner for $6; vegan lip stain for $8.50; and many other affordable products as well. A few of their items cost more than what a teen may easily be able to afford, but thanks to inexpensive sets and singles, you could still put together a great collection of makeup at Urban Decay for a lot less than you’d pay elsewhere.
