Ever imagine that you could bake wholesome bread at home without the aid of a bread maker? It’s surprisingly easy and simple to bake homemade bread in your kitchen with just a few basic ingredients (flour, water, yeast), and it’s a super fun activity to get little (and big) hands moving and learning about how we make our food. My son started baking fresh bread every morning at his delicious-smelling Waldorf preschool, and so I co-opted the recipe to try at home. Here’s an easy, vegan, Waldorf-style bread recipe that uses only a few ingredients, and takes just a couple minutes of prep time in the kitchen with your kid before you can get to the fun part: kneading the dough and making all sorts of fun shapes like snakes and snails! 2 Cups of Warm Water
1 tablespoon of maple syrup
1 tablespoon of yeast
4-5 cups of whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon of salt
STEP 1: Make Yeast “Soup”
– Fill your bowl with 2 cups of warm water
– Mix in maple syrup (or some other sweet pourable substance like honey)
– Put in the yeast and mix it up until it starts to bubble – this is the sign that the yeast is eating the sugar and starting to get active!
STEP 2: Mix in the flour
– Add in the flour & salt
– Stir and mix until the dough is stiff (and not sticky) and can’t be stirred anymore
– Knead the dough for a few minutes – when the dough is stiff and no longer sticky, it needs to rest
STEP 3: Dough takes a nap (and rises)
Set the dough aside in the bowl with a cloth cover over the bowl for about 45 minutes to allow the yeast to go to town and make the dough rise. When the dough has risen to about twice its original size (usually after about 45 minutes), it is ready to form and then bake.
STEP 4: Grease up a baking tray
STEP 5: Make shapes & have fun!
– Make snails, snakes, dinosaurs or whatever you want!
– or you can just make regular shaped dinner rolls if you want to be that way 😛
STEP 6: Bake for 20 minutes
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until light brown
STEP 7: Enjoy!
These rolls are best eaten fresh and warm with olive oil, jam or butter.
Since they have no preservatives they do not keep fresh and soft long, so enjoy them while they’re hot and toasty!
