And those with hopes of a ‘greener’ America made a collective sigh of relief (remember “Drill baby, drill?”) But more importantly, the victory came with a promise that the President-elect’s kids would get a puppy for the White House. INHABITAT FOUNDER GIVES BIRTH… TWICE: After many months of gestation, and a somewhat painless labor, Inhabitat founder, Jill Fehrenbacher gave birth to a bouncing baby blog on August 1st, 2008… And then several days later, her own little Inhabitot, Baby Petey, was born.

OLD SCHOOL TO THE NEW: Next American City magazine discusses the rise of co-operative pre-schools.

THE ROLLING RURAL CLASSROOM makes more efficient use of carbon by allowing kids to learn while traveling to and from school.

USED IS THE NEW BLACK: With the economy in a downward tailspin, no hope for a soft landing, and talks of recession in the air, parents revisited an old tradition – fashionable frugality. Gently used, hand-me-down, and rented items were embraced in 2008.

FAST-FOOD ZONING is passed in California, and health conscious parents country-wide hope that their neighborhood will be next.

DISNEY PROSELYTIZES ENVIRONMENTALISM. Even though it was most likely a capitalist response to populist sentiment, WALL-E’s eco-apocalyptic message was surprisingly un-Disney.

PORTLAND, OREGON IS THE GREENEST CITY: Want to raise your kid in a truly green environment? Make like our fabulous managing editor Beth Shea, and move to Portland, OR. The city was named ‘greenest’ by Popular Science magazine because, “Half its power comes from renewable sources, a quarter of the workforce commutes by bike, carpool or public transportation, and it has 35 buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.”

MOMS TO MOTRIN EXECS, “NOT FUNNY!”: The Motrin ad poking fun at the ‘pains’ of babywearing was quickly pulled due to backlash from Internet moms who simply weren’t having it. And Inhabitots was one of the first on the blogosphere to comment on how tonedeaf and just plain annoying the ad for the painkiller was.

‘SINGLE LADIES’ CAUSES KIDS DANCE CRAZE and reinforces the argument that too much TV is no good.

THE BUBBLE WRAP TOY, Mugen Puchi Puchi, by Bandai saves pop crazy fans from stocking their homes with the plastic stuff.
