Mattel's Children's Hospital UCLA has unveiled an awesome 46 foot play whale named Samo in the Santa Monica Place Mall. Designed by Bob Bangham from RipBangSVI and Arthur M. Cappola of Macerich as a vibrant and fun place for children aged 5-8 to learn about environmental issues in general and humpback whales in particular, Samo's Clubhouse features recycled materials and a host of interactive toys that are bound to get your kids excited about caring for nature.
Samo is made from steel ribs and sustainably harvested wood decking and then wrapped in a rope netting. The “ocean floor” is made from recycled rubber that is also very safe for children to play on. Located on the mall’s third floor in the food court and visible from both the interior and exterior of the mall, this environmental showcase is as much fun as it is educational.
Found objects such as talk tubes, telescopes, and periscopes further enhance the maritime theme of what is now known as Samo’s Clubhouse and which conveys the message that when we take care of the environment, we also take care of ourselves. Santa Monica has long taken the lead in protecting its natural resources, which makes this fun and unusual showcase even more special for the community. So if you happen to be in Santa Monica, head on down to visit Samo the whale. It will keep your kids occupied for hours!
