Modern-day parents can certainly agree that raising children in today’s world is no walk in the park. Not that parenting has ever been easy — but between tots and technology, crime being broadcast right and left, and simpler times giving way to an increasingly complex maze, we miss yesteryear. Remember your childhood? You could play outside til nightfall without a care in the world? Parents today are considered “bad” if they let their children out of their sight. But read the convincing case for sending your kids outside to play by themselves. Playtime is also becoming more and more obsolete as parents push academics over play, which may harm kids’ health. Some moms and dads feel their kids don’t know how to engage with kids, so they’re paying ‘recreation experts’ $400 an hour to teach their child how to play. And what ever happened to good, old-fashioned slumber parties? Due to overprotective parental fears, no one ever sleeps away from home anymore. Recently, there has been a spotlight on gender identification, as one mom recently wrote a book on raising her ‘gender-creative’ son, but should this even be a topic of discussion? Living in the age of technology also means parents and or schools are monitoring their childrens’ social media activity, and trying to limit or eliminate screen time while staying aware of the many downfalls of kids’ addiction to tech and screen time. All of these issues make us nostalgic for the good ol’ days!
