Many of Freund’s images capture a typical scene: a new dad, gently cradling a swaddled newborn, often with tears in his eyes or a smile on his face. She also memorializes other moments surrounding birth, as her subjects support laboring mamas through this pain and that push, or during a Cesarean operation. Freund, who lives and works near Vancouver, British Columbia, aimed to photograph the full range of emotions men experience as they become fathers.

“I want people to understand that birth isn’t just a journey for the mom,” Freund told My Modern Met, “but a dad also goes through an important journey of his own. His journey consists of many emotions including fear, strength, support, boredom, and joy. Some men are strong, supportive rocks for their partner to lean on, others fearfully sit in the shadows terrified watching their partner in pain, but all end up moved beyond words when they hold their sons and daughters in their arms for the first time. [The photographs are] a tribute to the many men I have watched become fathers this year.”

Freund’s images of new fathers will appear in the upcoming book For Love, set for release on March 15. The book contains this and other photo essays curated by the founders of My Modern Met.
