When Willow Creek Academy in Sausalito, California, lost its library last year due changes in the school district, two of the plucky second graders who attend the school decided to do something about it. Josephine Sinclair and Sarai Williams have launched Dr. Seuss Wants You!, an Indiegogo campaign to raise $20,000 to help employ a librarian and to purchase resources and technology to bring the space into the 21st century.

The girls say that last year, “when we started school there were no books on the shelves and we had no librarian to help us fill them! It was sad.” The school community pitched in to donate books, and the success of this campaign resulted in an organizational workload that proved too big for parents to manage on a volunteer basis. They knew a professional librarian was needed, not only for cataloging, but to oversee programming and teach the students how to use the facilities and technologies effectively.

After some not-so-successful conventional fundraising activities by the school community, the girls have turned to crowdsourcing to raise money. A librarian has already been found who can staff the library part-time should funds become available, and pledges would also be used to purchase grade-appropriate literacy resources and reference titles, technology to help the students become information literate, and “programs to support a love of learning for us and a generation of kids who will enjoy our library.” It’s estimated that total costs of stage one of the library restoration will come to $54,000, with the additional funds coming from parent donations.

Perks for this campaign are particularly adorable, and include personalized thank-you videos, artworks by the girls, one of five handcrafted books, and the biggie: a bedtime story read by Sarai and Josephine in person or via webcast (although they write, “Please note: Our bedtime is 8pm and our parents are pretty strict. Also, we’re in 2nd grade, so we may have to sound out the hard words. We like books with pictures the best. We hope you do too!”) To support the campaign to bring back the school library, visit Indiegogo. The campaign closes on October 6, 2014.
