Maine Bunk Beds founder, Scott Taylor founded his company, Maine Bunk Beds, in 2009. He started the company after learning first hand why it's so important to protect children from unnecessary chemical exposure after his son fell ill following toxic exposure and was ultimately diagnosed with various medical problems, including autism. After that, Scott decided to make sure his business could offer beds that were safe for kids and affordable for parents. Maine Bunk Beds avoids harmful chemicals during manufacturing, has other green practices in place, plus their beds are divine. Need a regular bunk bed or a loft? How about a loft with a desk underneath or a single over a full or maybe even a triple decker! Maine Bunk Beds has you covered with an amazing unique range of sustainable bunk bed choices that come in all the hues of the rainbow. Keep reading to learn more about this eco-friendly company.
All of the beds created by Maine Bunk Beds are built by dedicated, skilled craftsman locally in Maine. The beds are 100% chipboard-free. The company uses poplar for their furniture — a high-quality, sustainable, locally sourced, renewable hardwood, along with super safe milk paints and other kid-safe finishes.
Strong Safe Quality
Maine Bunk Beds are made fun for kids but literally strong enough for adults to use. The company uses oversize bed rails and 3 1/4” corner posts that can support over 300 lbs. Other than the architectural bolts used to attach the rails to the corner frames, all Maine Bunk Beds are metal-free. All beds comply with the ASTM F-1427 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bunk Beds and the Government Code of Federal Regulations 1213 and 1513. Beautiful Safe Colors
When Maine Bunk Beds launched, the company held a long search for the safest finishes they could find and settled on Milk Paint, which is organic and safe for people and the environment as well. The ingredients used in Milk Paint base paint are used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and are all completely biodegradable. Plus Milk Paint is 100% free of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs), solvents or harmful poisons, lead, mercury, radioactive materials, petroleum byproducts, plastics and synthetic preservatives. Maine Bunk Beds also seals their paint and clear coats with Vermont Natural Coatings semi-gloss poly-whey scratch-resistant finish, made from recycled whey protein, plus this finish passes indoor air-quality standards with ultra-VOC levels. Maine Bunk Beds offers a beautiful rainbow of colors to choose from, allowing you to completely personalize your child’s sleeping space.

Green & Ethical Practices
Maine Bunk Beds believes that true sustainability extends beyond the materials they use and thus they work green practices into their business philosophy as well. They use sound business stewardship and sustainable practices, like sourcing woods and other materials locally and the beds are built locally not by overseas minimum-wage employees. The company disposes of waste materials responsibly, donating all their sawdust to local Maine dairy farmers for use as cow bedding — and since there are no toxic glues or formaldehyde in their beds, the company uses the cutoffs in woodstoves during the winter months. The company also encourages other parents to get involved with organizations that support efforts to raise special needs children, such as The National Autism Association and the The Autism Solution Center. You can learn more about organizations to get involved with at Maine Bunk Beds.
