Okay, we get it: being a parent in Sweden is awesome. One of the top 5 places to be a mom and a top 5 place for overall child well-being, the country is adding a third month of PAID paternity leave for dads in 2016. This is on top of an already amazing parental leave policy: Swedish parents get 480 days of paid parental leave when a child is born or adopted and which can be accumulated after the birth or adoption of additional children. Parents have until their child reaches the age of 8 to use the leave! Currently, two months of parental leave are reserved exclusively for dads, and if the days aren’t taken advantage of, they’re lost. The result: close to 90% of Swedish dads use the benefit. Yay for Sweden and boo for the United States and our lame twelve weeks of unpaid leave (and even that is only for full-time workers at large companies).
