Interactive Map Compares Transit Habits of Hundreds of Cities

TheĀ European Platform on Mobility Management [4] (EPOMM) just unveiled a new interactive web tool [5] that makes it easy to compare transportation data between cities internationally. Now analysts, designers, and planners can conveniently view data on transportation habits [6] in hundreds of cities. Unfortunately, all of this data highlights how far behind American cities are compared to European cities.

Less than 7 percent of Americans use public transportation once a week. A glance at the interactive EPOMM Modal Split Tool [5] (TEMS for short) shows that London residents [7] regularly commute by public transit more than 5 times as often as the average American. Residents of Bruges are more than 25 times more likely to bike to work [8] than the average American. As TEMS illustrates, American cities have a lot of improvements to work on, but also scores of exemplary cities to inspire progress.
