Just when you thought the original Fiat 500 couldn’t get any cuter, Italian home appliance manufacturer Smeg has gone and turned the front end of the car into a stylish mini fridge [2]. The two iconic Italian brands have joined together to challenge the limits of design and create something new out of the familiar and show just how innovative recycled design can be. Now, when you look into the hood of the Fiat [3] 500, you may not encounter a motor, but frozen peas and chilled lemonade.

The merging of the brands isn’t as random as you might think. When Smeg was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni, one of the company’s first collaborations was working with Fiat to create refrigerators [5]. The two brands are icons of Italian design, so a modern collaboration seems like a natural fit.

Once you pop open the hood of the Fiat refrigerator, you will find an instrument cluster, just like you would find on the inside of a Fiat 500. The fridge has a 100-liter capacity and can freeze or chill, depending on what you need out of your car-slash-cooler. You can choose white, red or green for your refrigerator.

The refrigerator is a part of the Fiat Design Collection [6], a Fiat design project meant to celebrate the original little car, and Italian furniture designer Meritalia [7] is also getting in on the fun with a furniture series made out of original Fiat parts. It will go on sale this month, though the price hasn’t been announced yet, and we can’t wait to see what creative design the Fiat-Smeg mini fridge gets incorporated into.
