Although the finer details of the project have yet to be released, the Hangzhou Wave towers in China are definitely raising the bar for sustainable architecture. The two volumes have both been manipulated to allow for plenty of natural daylighting and feature all kinds of carbon sponging. On the hotel side, there is one long swooping green roof, whereas the green-tipped hotel terraces are wrapped around a central courtyard, further maximizing the project’s overall green space.
As impressive as this design is, we would be remiss if we didn’t point out the sheer scale of this project at 120,000 square meters. That’s a lot of construction material for one of the world’s biggest polluters, but we hope that the abundance of green space will mitigate some of the harm and that a variety of energy-saving techniques will be incorporated into the final design. In any case, there’s no question that these towers are beautiful, and we can’t wait to see how the project evolves.
