Gallery: Jean Nouvel & MDW Architecture Unveil Passive Tower for Belgiu...

The City of Charleroi in Belgium has commissioned CFE to execute all aspects of Jean Nouvel & MDW Architecture's exciting collaborative design of a passive elliptical tower in Belgium. In addition to preserving two wings of an existing cavalry that will be upgraded to meet modern energy requirements, the vertical addition to the Charleroi/Danses homes and artists studios will also become the new police headquarters.

We don’t have a lot of details about Charleroi’s new police headquarters, except that the 3rd towering vertical wing of the existing brick building will incorporate passive solar design in order to ensure high energy performance and will be clad in blue tiles. This part of the building will house the police headquarters, while the studios and residences down below will retain their human scale.

The entire program will be accessible via plaza at street level, and a tent on the roof will house the new Belvedere foyer! The existing portions of the building will be equipped with new materials and technologies to ensure that they don’t leak unnecessary energy, creating a powerful new green icon to Belgium’s fifth most populated city.
