The direct route from Burbank to Long Beach does not use the 405, but those alternate routes were heavily affected by the 405 closure. I chose to use the train and bring my bike to get where I needed to be this weekend. Unfortunately the train system was totally overwhelmed. They were totally incapable of handling that many people, and there were massive delays and other problems. Burbank and Long Beach aren't exactly tourist destinations either, so your comment about people jumping on board just to get a deal doesn't make much sense. It's not like Jet Blue is making any money off this, so I don't understand your negativity. It seems they were trying to alleviate some of the congestion by filling flights that may not have been at capacity. That REMOVES CO2 from the system (less cars, same number of planes). I think your point about biking, or other human transport, is a great idea. The rest of your article feels like a lot of poorly thought out whining.

Since takeoff and landing are the most risky parts of a flight I would not bet on that being safer...

But isn't flying safer than driving? Surely safety counts for something?
