When peeling back the top a sardine can, the last thing you’d expect to find is a beautiful diorama. Contained within an old sardine or mint tin, Jim Doran creates these mini worlds of metaphysical wonder. The Baltimore-based artist lets his imagination run wild, carving tiny detailed pen and ink illustrations to form minuscule scenes that enchant the eye.

Doran reuses boxes and cans to house these unusual worlds, but his focus is primarily on their new contents. His drawings often inspired by the themes of the sea and the divine. He carves his paper drawings using a scalpel, building the small details into layers to give them 3D life.
