The Ecological Table, designed by Dutch artist Jip Piet Hilhorst, is an awesome piece of living furniture created entirely from soil and plants. A variety of edible herbs are planted in the moisture-rich soil that forms the table’s structure, nurturing the link that connects the farm to our plate. All who sit down to a meal at the table will be reminded of the need to support local farms.
There’s no evidence of structure beneath the living surface, so the compacted earth appears to be magically supported by its four sturdy legs. Built into the Ecological Table is a tasty array of herbs and plants that encourage us to not only re-think design, but also nutrition. The organic table-top is a clean concept within the framework of a dirt-clad piece of furniture.
