July 2012 Was the Hottest US Month In Recorded History

In the 117 years since people began recording temperature patterns in the US, there has never been a summer as hot as what we’ve experienced this year: July of 2012 has been the hottest on record since 1895. Temperatures soared across the continental United States last month, with an average temperature of 77.6 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this is 3.3 degrees higher than average temperatures have been for any given month in over a century.
The soaring heat has created disaster-level crises; it’s estimated that two-thirds of the lower states are in a state of drought , meanwhile wildfires have swept across western states. Other troubling effects of the recent increase in temperatures have included the deaths of thousands of fish and reports of cows being unable to produce milk , and heat-related deaths soaring, it’s difficult to just disregard or deny the signs all around us.
The recent shift towards extreme weather seems to be affecting even naysayers of climate change and global warming—some prominent former deniers, including Richard Muller have reconsidered their stance on the subject, in Muller’s case admitting that human’s are “almost certainly the cause” of global warming.
