KitHAUS modular homes have a breezy backyard feel to them– perfect as a guest house or studio in a lush area of your yard. We’ve covered KitHAUS modular homes before on Inhabitat: here and here. Early models such as the K1 and K2 were aluminum-clad with high ceilings and tall windows. However, the latest KitHaus models, K3 and K4, have beautiful wooden louvers and a bit of a smaller footprint. With an updated look and new add-on options from the K4, a couple in Williamsburg, Brooklyn was able to create a lush atmosphere by simply adding some decking and potted plants.

This K4 KitHAUS in Williamsburg (shown above) is sandwiched between a brick rowhouse, a warehouse and light industrial building, but you’d never know from these pictures. To build the little Haus, the installers had to hand carry all the pieces through a 3-story rowhouse to get it to the back yard. Then they built the custom deck around it to create this modern green pre-fab which serves as a little urban oasis.

KitHAUS is built with many green components to maximize energy efficiency and space.  The structure is made from The structure is built with MHS aluminum building system, which was invented by architectural engineer Tim Siahatgar. The structure also uses Green Wall SIPs infill walls. The SIPs, or structural insulated panels, have R-14 insulation and all the windows and doors have low-E glazing. All other wood is IPE Brazilian hardwood, which is FSC-certified and naturally resistant to mold, rot, and insects. IPE is 8 times harder than redwood and guaranteed to last 25 years without treatment. Additionally, all KitHAUSes can be upgraded with a 1 kilowatt customized photovoltaic system to harness some of the sun’s rays for energy.

Design Within Reach is now selling the new modules with options for louvers, decks, and canopies, starting from $29,500 and up to $44,900. DWR is also selling customized furnishing packages that maximize space and functionality. The KitHaus can be seen live at the next DWR Event in Austin, TX on November 6th, from 6-9 pm.
