L’Observatoire by CLP Architects Is A Lookout Tower That Blends Into The Forest

When preparing their entry for the the Archi<20 ^[6] competition, CLP Architects ^[7] faced several constraints: to produce a functional, eco-friendly, 20-square-meter pavilion that reflects its natural environment—and all on a fixed budget of just €7,000. The team came up with this tall and narrow structure, which gives people a new way to interact with the forest around them, providing different lookout points and places to relax on each level. The resulting structure is as handsome as it is functional.

From a distance, the patterns of the square windows and wood panels in the observatory seem to reflect the way light is filtered through the trees in the surrounding forest. Inside there are three different levels, which are connected by an interior staircase. The stairs take up about one-fourth of the interior space, and the rest is left open for seating.

CLP Architects ^[7], a firm consisting of Chilean architects Jose Prieto Daniel Concepcion and French designer Fanny Landeau, built the structure for the Archi<20 festival of architecture in the Alsace region of France, which runs from June through mid September. Throughout the summer, 20 different eco-friendly structures like this one — all of them measuring 20 square meters — will be unveiled as part of the festival.
