One of Inhabitat Local’s favorite architects, David Hertz [3], has been working in partnership with LivingHomes [4] to deliver his DH1 line. The sleek two-story design features mechanical connections between the varied prefabricated modules, and comes together as a kit of parts, or plug and play pieces, that make it easy to expand and adapt to a homeowner’s changing needs. Not necessarily the most modest size house, plans start at 2,200 sf and go up to 2,600 sf. The L-shape of the home embraces a semi-private courtyard and features raised ceilings throughout.

Each 2-story floor plan comes with a series of balconies, various open living spaces, a rooftop garden [5], up to four bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, and 2 three-quarter bathrooms. As with all LivingHomes products, each future resident have the ability to choose from an array of sustainable systems and finishes that ensure a small carbon footprint. The cost of the DH1 line cost approximately $215/sf excluding the site work, foundation, as well as transportation and instillation.

“Having studied architect at the Sci-ARC during the last energy crisis, I have always had a deep interest in environmental design,” states David Hertz [6], “With my background in product and material manufacturing, I see my collaboration with LivingHomes as a natural evolution and the perfect outlet for our interests. I’m also honored to be included in the Living Homes lineage of architects, in the company of mentor and teacher, Ray Kappe [7].”
