Bidding War over the Crystal Cathedral Campus

The “Hour of Power” for Crystal Cathedral draws to a close, but the bids to buy the campus of this Southern California Icon keep rolling in. Earlier this month, the local congregation was doing their best to raise the $50 million estimated to save their church, and Oklahoma based Hobby Lobby made a $47.5-million cash bid. Currently in the lead to buy the landmark is the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange and Chapman University with the leading bid closing in on $55-million. Meanwhile in the fray of it all, the Crystal Cathedral Ministries are still trying to raise the necessary funds to maintain their home.
Founded by televangelist Robert H. Schuler , the Crystal Cathedral’s main sanctuary building was designed by prominent architect Philip Johnson and was completed in 1980. A space that pays ultimate homage to daylighting strategies, as the entire building is sheathed in glass from floor to ceiling. While we are not exactly sure what the energy costs are for heating and cooling such a large glass building, we are highly in favor of preserving such unique works of iconic architecture. In 2010 the Church had to file for protection under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and was force to consider what it would mean for the future of the campus. If you are interested in making a “Miracle Faith Offering” and keep the Cathedral in the hands of its current owners, click on the website below.
