LA-based firm New Theme designed the Greenberg Green house around site conditions, constraints, programmatic use and views. The home’s shape and orientation were expressly designed to minimize exposure to the prevailing winds, while also using them to encourage natural ventilation. While the site is awkwardly shaped, the home makes the most of it and utilizes its unusual qualities to maximize ventilation and natural daylighting. The two-story home features an outer shell on one side for protection and open walkways on the other, along with a protected courtyard space.

The home doesn’t have much space for a traditional backyard, so the lawn is located on a roof with outdoor stairway access. Edible plants are incorporated into the roofscape along with a solar photovoltaic canopy, which also provides shade. The green roof improves insulation while the solar system provides renewable energy for the home. The Green Greenberg Green house was part of the LEED for Homes pilot program, and it earned LEED Silver certification in 2012.
