The LED-lit One Raffles Place Tower Two is a worthy successor to its taller neighbor, One Raffles Place Tower One [1], with a flair for environmentally advanced design. Located right in the heat of the bustling downtown of Singapore’s financial district [2], the tower’s 38 gleaming, LED-illuminated stories tell the tale of a new breed of buildings that are designed to do more with less. The building, which achieved the Green Mark Platinum Award, is the work of SAA [3] and Paul Noritaka Tange [4], the son of the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Kenzo Tange [5].

The new building provides a counterpoint to its older sibling with an angular slope and a lot of windows. The cross bracing is very reminiscent of the famous Bank of Hong Kong Tower, which is further emphasized by the facade’s LED lighting [6], and in the building’s relationship to its boxy neighbors. The inside is where the real green design kicks in, starting with natural lighting. Automated sensors, which are located throughout the entire building, regulate temperature and lighting to maximize energy savings. And an efficient HVAC system is complimented by a solar array. Sustainable materials are also listed as a key attribute to the building’s environmental goals.

Unfortunately, information about how the actually systems work are unavailable. We would love to see the design firms brag about the tower’s environmental impact [7] as much as they do the building’s aesthetics. Achieving the Singapore Building and Construction Authority Green Mark [8] Platinum Award is impressive at this scale though, and sets the standard for all new skyscrapers in the highly-urbanized nation.
