LEGO Soon to Get the “Best Museum EVER” by BIG and RAA

LEGO building blocks may arguably be the best toy ever – and they’ll soon be getting the “best museum ever”! Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) , the Danish starchitecture firm, and Ralph Appelbaum Associates recently won an international competition to design the LEGO House — a public museum and experience center coming to Billund, Denmark, home of the toy that’s beloved all over the world.
Ingels, founder of BIG , has (with his typical modesty) called the design the “best museum ever.” In his own words, “I owe a huge personal debt to the LEGO brick, and I can see in my nephews that its role in developing the child as a creative, thinking, imaginative human being becomes ever stronger in a world in which creativity and innovation are key elements in virtually all aspects of society.”
Details about the design are yet to be released, but according to Hans Peter Folmann, Senior Director at LEGO Huset, “In our competitions for the project these two companies had the best understanding of the idea behind the LEGO brick, LEGO play and LEGO values.” Construction is set to start in 2014, with the opening scheduled for 2016.
