National Cancer Institute LED Backlit Wood Walls by HOK/MCLA/GPI Design
Over 2,000 square feet custom LED backlit wood veneer panels adorn the main lobby feature walls of the National Cancer Institute research campus in Rockville, Maryland. The cancerous burl growth on a single Redwood tree was transformed into thin raw veneer, then laminated between glass and illuminated with GPI Design's Flat-Lite LED Panels. Celebrating the organic natural wood material while allowing flexibility, the LED backlighting is tuned per particular wood pattern and tied back to a central lighting controller with preset scenes that can be changed from a smartphone app.
