Gee they wonder why pollution levels are at twice their level or more. By burning fuel all night to turn night into day. This is a great idea founded long time ago by http://www.darksky.org/ but in the USA nothing ever prevails due to red tape and wasteful measures. Removing night time street lights willl: Make use of all the reflective surfaces on signs and road markings. Why use these expensive products if the cities are going to light them. This will put your headlights to work. Ever drive a road with no lights. It is really so easy, your headlights do a great job. Energy consumption, pollution will lessen - obvious. Prowlers, will need a flashlight to see what they are doing so they will be more easliy spotted. If you are worried, then install motion detectors. OH and remember the stars. I miss them. I want them back. I want to see the milky way again. I want to lay in the backyard and see the night sky.....I hope this snowballs into every nation and every day of the year....

I understand what you're saying Becks and I totally agree that's what should happen eventually but don't you think that this is good enough for now. After the energy saving figures are released from this one publicity stunt people may start to understand how much how much unecessary energy is being used up and realise how much of a difference our actions actually make.

Does anyone else feel like this is a bit of a hollow gesture? I was talking about the Sydney lights out with my housemate last night. It's like saying "Look how much energy we could save if we turned off all these unnecessary lights at night! Oh.... but we like how they look, so lets put them back on". I'm not suggesting all the street lights and peoples home lights need to be turned off... but there's so much unnecessary neon lighting at night in cities. I wonder how many of the people who go to Tokyo to marvel at the neon mess consider how much energy is being wasted each night? I think we should focus on a campaign to permanently turn off unnecessary lighting, not just for a one hour publicity stunt.

Actually, the original plan was to have this happen throughout all of England, but the utility company pointed the same thing that you did, that it would cause a huge problem with the electrical grid. But they mentioned that it wasn't a problem if it happened on a city by city basis...

I really hope Philly does this sometime soon. The light pollution there is awful - I'm about 30 mins away from the city and the whole sky is red at night. Surely the Cira Center could *not* be covered in little blue lights for an hour? I only wish the lights-out times were longer...
