If all of the ideas and concepts that were highlighted at the Greener Gadgets Conference were rolled into one product it would look and operate like the LINC Lifestyle Concept Phone from The Greener Grass. This team of forward thinking conceptual designers has envisioned a touch screen smart phone that puts complete connectivity into the hands of the mobile consumer without the social and environmental burden of e-waste.
LINC is a service delivered through stylish hardware that is designed for automated disassembly into recyclable components. When upgrades are available the user receives new hardware and the previous phone is shipped back to the manufacturer, who is responsible for managing reuse and recycling of materials.
The service-based cell phone concept puts end-use responsibility into the hands of the producer but LINC’s design makes e-waste handling a more feasible task. Once the phone is ready for disassembly an internal memory latch is released with a radiant heat beam. The phone, which contains no paints or adhesives, disbands into glass, aluminum and a circuit flex. The glass and aluminum are recycled or reused in pure form. Elements of the circuit flex, the part with the most hazardous materials, can be repurposed for use in other electronics.
LINC is a solution that meets consumer expectations and addresses the environmental impact of technology. If implemented it would function as cell phone, media player and web browser with GPS, Bluetooth, wifi and 3G network capabilities while embodying a cradle-to-cradle mentality, something that is lacking in many of today’s consumer electronics.
