What the? They really expected 2 BILLION viewers? A third of the entire world's population? I'm just guessing here, but I don't think they reached the two billion mark.

I guess I sort of appreciate the effort of making environmental awareness "cool", but why headline it with some of the biggest hypocrites? I mean, really, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris? Madonna, even. Al Gore as well, I wish I could remember the site giving details about his very large home and very large electric bill.

Also, even if this concert is as "green" as possible, it still speaks of mindless consumerism and entertainment. Did they do a poll for audience members, at least, about why they were there?

Was it to support activism regarding climate change/global warming, or was it to see X, Y, and Z?

I'm tired of being cynical, I really am, trust me. :(

I was lucky enough to witness the 151st band to play at Live Earth. Or maybe I was unlucky. I haven't decided yet.

An "ethical folk-pop-rock" duo called Quentin and Crisp popped up in Budapest, where they had a big screen to show all the events, and played a song about climate change and other issues.

I believe they are a comedy act, but they could just be naff.

Anyway, I found a video of the event here: http://youtube.com/quentinandcrisp

Concerning emissions produced by the event itself: To their credit, Live Earth, has been working with the US Green Building Council to follow Green Event Guidelines for all venues. Its unclear if this will result in a carbon-neutral event, but efforts include:

* All electricity that powers the shows will be from renewable sources, either through utility supplied renewable energy, biodiesel generators, or renewable energy credits.

* Concessionaires will be encouraged to use and directed to suppliers of agricultural/ biodegradable plastics (i.e. made from corn). Also, concessionaire waste will be minimized through a comprehensive recycling and reuse system organized at the venue.

* Venue offices, walkways, etc will be optimized to use as little electricity as possible.

* The entire production design will follow sustainable light design principles. Production lighting will include the use of LED light bulbs, signage will be produced from recycled or agricultural materials, and some tickets will be integrated with public transportation access and green messaging.

* Live Earth staff and artist air travel will be offset through carbon credits

* Audience travel can count for up to 50% of an event's impact so Live Earth is encouraging concert-goers to carpool or take public transportation as well as offering information and links on the Live Earth website.

* Green practices have been implemented in the Live Earth offices and web-hosting for the effort is being supplied by AISO.net, the world's only 100% solar powered data center.

A press release outlining many of these efforts can be found here: http://www.liveearth.org/?p=13
