Logroño’s Stunning New High Speed Rail Station is Topped With a Public Park

Logroño's new train station is a 21st-century transportation hub topped with a green roof ^[6] that doubles as a public park. Designed by Abalos+Sentkiewicz Arquitectos ^[7], Highspeed Train Station Logroño features underground platforms with a tetrahedral ceiling and large skylit pavilions that draw light down into the space. The new public park on top improves the urban space while providing transportation accessibility for residents, commuters and visitors.

Abalos+Sentkiewicz Arquitectos ^[7]‘ new high speed train station is part of a larger project to create a transportation hub, public park and housing development on a single site in the riverside city of Logroño. A station already existed at the site but it needed to be upgraded for high speed rail. Abalos+Sentkiewicz Arquitectos ^[7] placed the new platforms underground, where a perforated metal ceiling with many facets creates an underground cavern. The roof also features its own unique topography – it’s topped with grass and vegetation and serves as a new city park.

Four round glass pavilions poke up through the green roof ^[6] and act as light wells to bring daylight into the levels below. Mirrors are also utilized to direct light down into the underground space. Surrounding the new station/park are five new residential towers. The entire project serves to provide greater connectivity between the north and south parts of the city. As Abalos+Sentkiewicz Arquitectos ^[7] describes, “Intermodal Stations are an opportunity to transform the city, creating public spaces, developing green belts, promoting pedestrian and bicycle mobility: an opportunity to create a new topography to intensify the experience of the city as a collective process.”
