We can hardly believe it is September once again, which can only mean one thing for the design calendar! That’s right, The London Design Festival 2008 is set to kick off on Saturday the 13th and will run until Tuesday the 23rd of September. Kate Andrews and Antonia Halse of Inhabitat’s London team will be scouting the events this year to bring you the latest and greatest, but for now here is a preview of some exciting eco highlights coming up in the schedule!
Alternative Sitting @ ECO 13-23 Sept :: ECO 213 Chiswick High Road, W4 2DW ECO, London’s green hub, store, showroom and consultancy will host an exhibition with installations by established and up and coming designers including Pli Design, Reestore, Viable London, Adam Rowe, Osian Batyka-Williams and Farm Design. ECO will also launch their roof terrace outfitted with solar powered ballustrades and plant insulation to help reduce the store’s energy needs.
Greengaged at the Design Council 15-23 Sept :: UK Design Council, WC2E 7DL The 2008 London Design Festival will see the launch of Greengaged, a series of events, debates, workshops, exhibitions, seminars and masterclasses held at the UK Design Council. Entirely focused upon issues relating to sustainability, Greengaged has been organized by thomas.matthews, [re]design and Kingston University.
Greener by Design 17 Sept :: The Royal Institution of Great Britain An evening event explores how we can make our buildings greener, by design. Speakers include: Sunand Prasad, president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and Chris Wise, Director of Expedition Engineering.
Feelgood Fashion – A Celebration of Ethical Entrepreneurship and Cutting-Edge Design 17 Sept :: The British Library, NW1 2DB A panel of four pioneering design and fashion entrepreneurs will talk about the new age of ‘eco-fashion’ and building the next generation of sustainable brands. Speakers include: Safia Minney (People Tree); Jen Ruppert (Revamp) and Ed Gillespie (Futerra).
SYSTEM RELOAD: Retooling Ourselves – Collaborative Design Actions 17-20 Sept :: The House of St Barnabas / The Hub, King Cross. The o2 Global Network, the international eco design network, launches System Reload London, a unique three-day event of participatory workshops intended to spark eco-creativity and create real and meaningful solutions. Participants include; Clare Brass and Flora Bowden (SEED Foundation); Aleksi Neuvonen and Roope Mokka (Demos Helsinki); Tom Ainsworth (10to4); Kelly Davis; Fatina Saikali (CoCreando); Lili Larratea (Play Rethink); Shay Launder (Swamp Collective); Ian Crawford; Servane Mouazan (Ogunte); Alison Coward (Bracket) and Barbara Patkova (Magnificient Revolution).
LIGHTEN UP by [re]design 18-21 Sept :: 100% Futures, Earls Court. Sustainable design innovators [re]design return to 100% Futures to launch their LIGHTEN UP exhibition feature and book.
TOM DIXON, The Factory 18-24 Sept :: 5 Cromwell Place, SW7 2JB Tom Dixon and George Smith will transform a Knightsbridge ballroom into an upholstery factory and create a new collection on site. Tom will be signing copies of his new book ‘The Interior World of Tom Dixon’ on Thursday 18th September at 3pm. Tom also remains the Creative Director for 100% Design this year and will be launching the 2008 collection “A Bit of Rough.”
TENT London 18-21 Sept :: Truman Brewery, Brick Lane With over 300 exhibitors, Tent London will take over Brick Lane’s Truman Brewery for an eclectic mix of design for everyone to see!
Models of Sustainable Design, at 100% Sustainable 18-21 Sept :: 100% Design, Earls Court. The University of Brighton’s IF:Laboratory will create and curate a unique event space that will bring sustainable design discourse, discussions and debate to the floor of 100% Design. The theme for this year’s event is “Models of Sustainable Design”, and admission comes complete with a miniature world and model railway!
Ten twentytwentyone, at 100% Design 18-21 Sept :: Stand G40, 100% Design, Earls Court Award-winning design group TEN return to 100% Design, showcasing innovative approaches to sustainable design, produced in partnership with retailer twentytwentyone.
100% Design 18-21 Sept :: Earls Court Connecting the worlds of architecture and design with innovative, contemporary interior products, 100% Design is the UK’s leading contemporary interiors event.
24HR DESIGN & MAKE 19-20 Sept :: 121-123 Deptford High Street, SE8 4NS From 7am to 7am, a number of creative teams will be given basic materials, tools and a brief to bring together objects, drawings, installation, music, video and textiles!
360o – Charting New Territory in Sustainable Design Education 19-21 Sept :: University of Brighton and 100% Sustainable, Earls Court, London DEEDS (Design Education Sustainability) invites UK and international design educators, postgraduates, undergraduates and design practitioners who are interested in higher education and sustainable design, to a day of talks and interactive media presentations as part of 100% Sustainable.
Beau Sauvage at Liberty 19 Sep-19 Oct :: LIBERTY, Great Marlborough Street, W1B 5AH Beau Sauvage at Liberty explores the complexities and contrasts in contemporary design – highlighting the beautiful and the raw through objects, furniture, new media and lighting designs.
Creative Resource: The Sustainable Materials Collection 23-29 Sept :: The Building Centre, WC1E 7BT Exploring the aesthetic, economic and manufacturing potential of materials made from waste, the Creative Resource collection focuses on the sustainable development of materials and the design process.
