London Design Festival 2009: Greengaged

After an energetic launch in 2008 that saw a huge mix of designers, strategists, chemists, policy writers, clients and agitators, the Greengaged  sustainable design hub returns for its second year at the Design Council for London Design Festival 2009 . Following the unveiling of a new website, Greengaged co-founder Sophie Thomas (also of thomas.matthews ) announced that five guest curators  had been selected to each invent and host a day based around their expert subject arena. “This year brings an exciting program where we will be mixing it all up once more building on emerging themes from last year,” explains Thomas.

Day 1: Design for Life: Barriers to Behaviour Change 
Mon 21st September
Ed Gillespie: Founder of Futerra  and slow travel expert , will explore the complexities of ‘design for Life’ – looking at issues relating to travel, energy and housing and asking the big questions like what exactly IS holding us back from pulling sustainability into mainstream design.
Day 2: Co-opportunity: A Day for World Builders 
Tues 22nd September
John Grant: Author of The Green Marketing Manifesto and former co-founder of St Luke’s, will be curating a day on new sustainable business and network models focusing on emerging alternative business structures and running a practical session on re-designing the banking system.
Day 3: Biomimicry in Design: Learning from Nature 
Weds 23rd September
Michael Pawlyn: Founder of Exploration Architecture  will speak about the influence of biomimicry on design. Innovators and thinkers in this field will join in discussions and debates with a practical design session in the afternoon.
Day 4: Crafting Mass Production 
Thurs 24th September
Curated by Anna Gerber : Design Critic, Educator and Publisher, and Three Trees Don’t Make A Forest  day four at greengaged will focus on the emerging new craft aesthetics in sustainable design, especially in regard to the relationship between the designer and our industrial processes. This day will involve lots of hands-on creative thinking with break out master classes and presentations.
Day 5: The Materials Behind Sustainability 
Fri 25th September
Dan Epstein: Head of Sustainability and Regeneration for the Olympic Delivery Authority , will discuss new innovations in sustainable materials. During the day, there will be opportunities to talk and brainstorm with material experts, innovators and inventors and see firsthand what the future of landscape of materials could look like.
Each curator will be working with additional partners and organizations with each day having related research trips to landfill sites, factories, workshops and sites. All designers, directors and interested people should sign up for a whole day to get a full understanding of the subjects and to get the most out of the curators’ programs.
The 2009 Greengaged  programme will run for five days from Monday the 21st to Friday the 25th September. All events next week are free but places are limited, so if you are in London <a href="register your place now! 
Greengaged  is a not for profit organization founded in 2008 by Sophie Thomas from thomas.matthews , Sarah Johnson from [re]design  and Anne Chick from The Sustainable Design Research Centre at Kingston University . Greengaged aims to advance the design industry’s capacity to respond positively to key environmental challenges such as climate change.
